Like we discussed with nootropics on a previous post, there are people who really like and support the effects of some supplements. Such supplements are supposed to help you gain energy, be stronger and smarter. Things that in the past were considered impossible. Now we are very close at achieving such goals and with some additional funding, supplements like this can become popular and help millions of people around the world.
Some are not so sure about the effectiveness of those drugs, and for good reason. There hasn’t been a lot of research on them and big companies aren’t invested yet. But all the evidence suggests that they do work. I am very interested in one of the specifically. It is called NAD+ (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and it works by helping mitochondrial respiration and by being a cosubstrate for Sirt1.
As we age, NAD+ is depleted, and cells start to die due to oxidative stress. This causes stem cells to lose their ability to divide and eventually leads to dysfunctional tissues in our bodies that cannot be repaired due to that lack of healthy stem cells.
The pathways and mechanisms that NAD+ affects, are very similar to those that regulate cell death and survival. NAD+ can be thought of as a protector of the cell, helping it to survive and live longer.
This is why many experts take NAD+ supplements daily and say that they do see benefits. This is not enough though to convince me so i looked at the latest studies. I found that this is true, that in most tests NAD+ supplements do improve help significantly. And it is weird that while you can buy pills from some companies, the bigger pharmaceutical companies are not invested yet. Maybe it is not profitable, but after my research i wanted to try them.
Whether they are safe or not, i cant tell, i think we need to see more studies on such supplements. But i do see the potential and wanted to investigate further. Oxidative stress can be introduced in all of our cells just because of cellular metabolism. The reason why we lose our ability to repair damage in our bodies as we age is still unclear but there are more and more scientists interested in why this may be.
I think it is very possible that in the near future we will have supplements that actually extend our lifespan, or increase our chances of reaching 90 or 100 years old. There are other scientists who develop therapies and try to think of more ways to extend the human lifespan through modern medicine like Aubrey de Grey. I really hope that this future is coming soon. We see so much potential and all that’s in the way is funding.
