Apple will soon be releasing its new phones. We are getting closer to that part of the year when Apple releases new iPhones and after the release of the iPhone X, the rumours for the next models are wild.
Let’s start with the basics. As usual we expect at this point a small increase in CPU performance, mostly graphics and an AI focused processor. A redesign of the Apple chips that encrypt the user data and accelerate performance. And then we get to the interesting stuff.
The rumours say that there will be three iPhones, two replacing the 8 and 8 plus. With all screen fronts like the X. Another rumours says that there will be an update to the SE with an all screen design as well. Finally there are rumours around the next iPhone X being bigger but basically the same.
What i really think comes. I don’t think and many agree, that there will be an all screen front replacement for the SE. The display required to make the X is very expensive. Other Android manufacturers cannot order it and instead they compromise having a slightly larger chin on their phones because the display components have to go somewhere. The iPhone X display folds those components, and that’s too expensive for Apple’s profit margins.
The replacements for the 8 and 8 plus will probably have an all screen front design and the Face ID unlock feature. Apple will either make the X obsolete and release all of it’s features on the replacements for the 8, or they will reduce the resolution of the display and maybe even the Face ID sensors to keep the X relevant for 6 more months until they release the next one.
Maybe OLED? On all models? It is very possible. OLED isn’t that expensive anymore and it is much better than IPS. Although Apple would want only the panels that have the less burn-in issues.
The rumours are a bit weird here. Some say that the 9 and 9 plus will make the X obsolete and that there will be an X2 that will be better. In that case we should expect a redesign of the X2 or a special colour for it. There should be something separating it from the cheaper ones. Apple has always made sure that the ones who spend the most have a way to show it. The other rumours say there will be no new iPhone X2, just two iPhones 9 and 9 plus that make the X obsolete until the new X2 comes in 6 months. In terms of new designs, Apple might consider introducing angles to the X2 and making it thinner. By introducing a more square design they will differentiate themselves from competitors and the previous generation, while making the display seem like it is covering even more of the front of the phone.
There is no third sensor. This is a stupid Huawei feature and obviously Apple would do such a thing. On the other hand they might be improving their dual sensor setup with bigger sensors. Like the Google Pixel 2, iPhone 8 and 8 plus had big sensors (for phones). But the Pixel had bigger pixels and thus better low light performance. Apple will try to fix that by making the sensor larger. They could also use more advanced optics and keep the lens the same size. At those prices they can afford such components so they might. Processing with AI will be coming in a way better version. Detecting animals, faces, landscapes, etc. and adjusting settings and HDR accordingly. This is what Apple knows best, how to make the colours fit the scene. And now this will be much better.
Many companies including Google and Huawei have been adding extra chips for additional processing power or functionality on their phones. Apple doesn’t need to do so since they use a custom SoC and they could order any additional parts in it’s design, but they may be adding some feature like so or even an AI accelerator. The headphone jack isn’t coming back. The notch isn’t getting smaller. It won’t go away either. Apple spent a lot of money on Face ID and they will never add moving parts on their devices unless they are necessary.
The odd rumours.
Others say that there will be no iPhone 9, instead an iPhone 8 and 8 plus with the same design as before or maybe small changes. And that the X2 will also just have improved specs. But even for Apple it is weird to stick to a dated design for so long while the competition has become so much better. Although that was never a concern since iPhones are more like a fashion item for most, it makes sense for them at this point to make big steps instead of small ones. That’s why i don’t see this being true. I might be wrong though.
It will certainly be an interesting launch after the X. The names are unknown, almost everything is. But this isn’t unusual for Apple. They are the only company so big that can also keep everything a secret for so long. All we know is that they will release competitive, stylish, well performing phones sometime later in 2018.
